Kw’iyeqel’s Expressive Arts program is designed for students who have an interest in, and enthusiasm for, visual arts. Within this program, students will take an artistic approach to academic subjects in addition to visual arts classes. Assessment in these courses is approached in a holistic manner, focusing on the development of the student utilizing the arts, and choice-based projects as a medium for demonstrating learning.

Subject matter specific to these tracks include.

  • Exploring the elements of visual art and principles of design as well as creative processes to create meaningful and personal works of art
  • Developing their image making strategies using materials, techniques, and technologies for visual art in 2D and 3D form
  • Using symbols and metaphors to express ideas about key themes such as identity, social contemporary issues and other self-directed themes
  • Discussing the influence of visual culture in social and other media and create responses to these concepts through written and visual work.
  • Gaining inspiration through traditional and contemporary First Peoples worldviews, stories, and history, as expressed through visual arts
  • Discussing moral rights and the ethics of cultural appropriation and plagiarism in contemporary works of art
  • Connecting with the local art community through both field trips as well as guest presenters and workshops

There are two tracks in this program, junior which includes grade 9 and 10, and senior which is grade 11 and 12. The academic subjects included in the junior program are Visual Arts 9/10, Math 9/10, Socials 9/10, English 9/10, and Careers Life Education 9/10, and Personal Development 10. The senior program covers Studio Art 11/12, Math Workplace 10/11, B.C. First Peoples 12, English 11/12, Career Life Connections 12 and Personal Development 11/12.
